United launches first mainline flight with Starlink WiFi onboard

United Airlines is set to make aviation history with the first Starlink-equipped mainline flight scheduled for takeoff tomorrow morning. United flight 2940 will depart from Newark/New York to Houston at 8 a.m. ET, marking the first time a major U.S. carrier has provided Starlink WiFi on a mainline aircraft, with connectivity available for both personal devices and seatback entertainment systems.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft will carry more than 170 passengers who will experience high-speed, low-latency internet comparable to home broadband, enabling live streaming, online shopping, gaming, and real-time work collaboration. Following the inaugural flight, the aircraft is also scheduled to operate routes between Houston (IAH) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) later in the day.

United plans to install Starlink on up to 15 mainline 737-800 aircraft each month. With more than half of its regional fleet already equipped, the airline expects an additional aircraft type to be certified by year's end. Each 737-800 will feature two Starlink antennas, part of a broader plan to install nearly 2,940 antennas across the fleet - a figure reflected in the flight number for this first journey.

MileagePlus members will enjoy free Starlink WiFi, and passengers will receive preflight notifications when their aircraft is equipped. "We're committed to raising the bar when it comes to the onboard experience, and with Starlink, we're changing how people fly," said David Kinzelman, United's Chief Customer Officer. "Whether it's catching a live game, streaming an award show or working, United customers won't miss a beat when they're onboard a Starlink-equipped flight."

The Starlink rollout builds on United's first regional test earlier this year, when Starlink-enabled regional jets received customer satisfaction ratings of 90 percent for speed, ease of use, and streaming quality. The service will support simultaneous connections across multiple devices, including personal electronics and seatback screens.

The program complements United's broader investment in passenger amenities, including plans to offer more than 300,000 seatback screens across its fleet - the largest in the U.S. airline industry. These upgrades are part of a multibillion-dollar effort to enhance passenger comfort, digital connectivity, and brand loyalty.
