NASA partners with four companies to expand Near Space Network capabilities

NASA has selected four commercial companies to enhance the Near Space Network's direct-to-Earth communication capabilities, a vital system that facilitates the transmission of spacecraft data to ground stations on Earth.

The new contracts, structured as firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity agreements, will span February 2025 through September 2029. An optional five-year extension could carry the contracts to September 30, 2034, with a maximum cumulative value of $4.82 billion.

Each company has been assigned task orders based on specific service subcategories:

- Intuitive Machines of Houston has been awarded two task orders under Subcategories 1.2 (GEO to Cislunar DTE Services) and 1.3 (xCislunar DTE Services). These contracts will support NASA's Lunar Exploration Ground Segment, addressing demands on the Deep Space Network and enabling mission requirements for highly elliptical orbits. Intuitive Machines also holds a prior award for Subcategory 2.2 (GEO to Cislunar Relay Services).

- Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) of Tromso, Norway, received task orders under Subcategories 1.1 (Earth Proximity DTE) and 1.2 to support low Earth orbit science missions and lunar ground operations. These services will also alleviate pressure on the Deep Space Network.

- SSC Space U.S. Inc. of Horsham, Pennsylvania, secured task orders for Subcategories 1.1 and 1.3 to provide support for low Earth orbit science missions and meet requirements for unique, highly elliptical orbits.

- Viasat, Inc. of Duluth, Georgia, was assigned a task order under Subcategory 1.1 to assist science missions in low Earth orbit.

The Near Space Network plays a critical role in NASA's operations, supporting missions from climate studies on Earth to deep-space research. It is integral to the Artemis program, which aims for sustained exploration of the Moon.

NASA emphasizes that the goal of these partnerships is to deliver secure, reliable, and cost-effective communication and navigation services that meet mission needs for latency, accuracy, and availability.

"This collaboration demonstrates NASA's commitment to leveraging the commercial space sector to provide the infrastructure required for the agency's science and exploration missions," NASA said.

Managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, under the SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) Program, the Near Space Network extends communications and navigation services to spacecraft as far as 1.2 million miles (2 million kilometers). It uses geosynchronous orbit relays and a global system of direct-to-Earth antennas, processing terabytes of data daily.
