Fit for service Themis reusable rocket stage reaches key development milestone

Paris, France (SPX) Dec 25, 2024

In December 2024, Europe's Themis reusable rocket first-stage demonstrator successfully completed a critical 'full fit-check' at ArianeGroup's Les Mureaux facility in France.

This significant step verified that all core components of Themis - including mechanical connections and interfaces - integrate seamlessly, ensuring the lower and upper segments align and connect as intended.

Standing 28 meters tall, the Themis model incorporates its essential systems: the engine bay, flight control bay, fuel tanks, and the upper stage. It is powered by Prometheus, a new-generation European engine developed by ArianeGroup. Running on liquid methane and liquid oxygen, Prometheus features throttle adjustment capabilities in-flight, a key function for controlled landings.

The successful fit-check marks one of the final milestones in Themis' development phase, designated T1H (Themis 1-engine Hop). It now paves the way for transport to Sweden's Esrange Space Center, where its first flight is scheduled for next year. This initial test, organized under the European Commission's Salto programme, will see the stage perform a short hop, taking off and landing at the same location.

For a closer look, watch the timelapse of the fit-check operation here.

Orion Spacecraft Tested in Ohio After Artemis I Mission
Cleveland OH (SPX) Dec 18, 2024
Making the voyage 1.4 million miles around the Moon and back - the farthest a spacecraft built for humans has ever gone - the Orion spacecraft has faced a battery of tests over the years. Though Orion successfully proved its capabilities in the harsh environment of space during the Artemis I mission, Orion's evaluation did not end at splashdown. The crew module, now known as the Orion Environmental Test Article (ETA), returned to NASA's Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio, in January 20 ... read more
