ESA-backed project paves way for next-generation in-flight connectivity

A new antenna system supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) could soon make high-speed streaming and real-time video calls available to airline passengers worldwide. Following the success of an ESA-backed test campaign, global satellite communications leader Viasat plans to commercialize its new in-flight connectivity solution, Viasat Amara.

The Amara system features a dual-beam phased array antenna capable of linking with both low Earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites. This hybrid capability allows it to optimize connections based on user demand - using LEO satellites for latency-sensitive applications such as video calls, and GEO satellites for bandwidth-heavy activities like streaming.

Developed under ESA's Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) programme, the prototype was tested in 2021 on a demonstration flight from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to Payerne, Switzerland. During the flight, the antenna maintained a stable satellite connection that allowed passengers to stream YouTube and Netflix content and hold live video calls throughout the journey.

Unlike conventional mechanical antennas, the new terminal employs an electronically steered phased array. It consists of numerous small antenna elements that synchronize their signals to track satellites electronically, eliminating the need for physical movement and enabling simultaneous dual-satellite connections.

Viasat expects to roll out the Amara service commercially in 2028. Its modular design means it can be integrated into existing aircraft systems, lowering installation costs and easing adoption across airline fleets.

This antenna development signals a major step toward more seamless and efficient connectivity in the skies.
