Bush Stands By Space Plan

President George W. Bush's new space exploration plan has received a burst of hard-core support in Congress, aimed at blocking any attempt to cut its funding, and backed up by a rare veto threat from the president himself. This development, reports Frank Sietzen, has emerged in the wake of action by a House subcommittee to cut NASA budget request.

First Interceptor Emplaced In Alaska Silo

Orbital Sciences Corporation announced that it supplied the first interceptor boost vehicle for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency's Ground-based Midcourse Defense system that was installed into an underground silo at Fort Greely, Alaska yesterday, July 22, 2004.

Sending A Messenger To Mercury

Messenger, NASA's first mission to the planet Mercury in 30 years, is scheduled for launch on August 2. Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) carries seven scientific instruments that will provide images of the entire planet, as well as information on the composition of Mercury's crust, core, and polar materials, its geologic history, and the nature of its thin atmosphere and active magnetosphere.
Opportunity Lives High Off The Hog

Opportunity continued its exploration of "Endurance Crater" the past five sols, and is now roughly 11 meters (about 36 feet) into the crater. The only drive during this period was on sol 171, when the rover turned around, backed down across the slope, then turned towards a feature called "Razorback."

Spirit Investigates Wooly Patch

On sol 194, Spirit took a large microscopic imager mosaic, consisting of 34 images at multiple positions, of a target called "Sabre" on an outcrop rock called "Wooly Patch." This was followed by a two-hour reading by the Moessbauer spectrometer and an overnight, seven-hour reading by the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer.
NASA Approves New Design For Shuttle External Tank Fitting
