Qualcomm Monday announced that Atlas Van Lines , a nationwide interstate motor carrier and division of Atlas World Group, has signed a commercial agreement to deploy Qualcomm's untethered trailer asset management solution.

The agreement demonstrates the growing need of companies in the transportation and logistics industry to efficiently manage their assets. The terms of the agreement include the shipment, installation and on-air provisioning of 4,000 units by the end of calendar year 2005.

Starting this fall, Atlas will begin deployment of Qualcomm's untethered trailer asset management solution, which will allow Atlas to pinpoint the location of each of its trailers at any time, while also giving customers near real-time information and peace of mind.

Atlas expects to make online tracking capabilities available to its customers once the solution has been implemented. Customers will be able to use the Web to track their possessions.

"Qualcomm's untethered trailer asset management solution was the best choice for us when we began our search for a solution that would help us manage our trailers that transport high value cargo," said James A. Stamm, president and COO, Atlas Van Lines .

"We needed a solution that provided us with improved security and an increased rate of trailer utilization that would integrate seamlessly into our back-end operations - and Qualcomm's solution addressed our every need."

"Qualcomm is pleased to be teaming up with Atlas Van Lines ," said Chris Wolfe, president of Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions.

"We are looking forward to providing Atlas with a complete untethered asset management solution that will truly enable them to improve operational efficiencies, better manage their trailer fleet and provide their customers with the added benefit of knowing where their belongings are."

Since 1989, Qualcomm has provided its tethered tracking system to more than 35,000 trailers within the NAFTA region. TrailerTRACS provides trailer ID, drop-and-hook notification, location, status and information when connected to an OmniTRACS equipped tractor.

The untethered trailer tracking system being developed will offer these same features plus a variety of other options, including door and cargo sensors, geofencing, over-the-air update capabilities and visibility of assets and loads whether or not a trailer is connected to a tractor.
