Russia Offers Honeymoon Flight For $40 Million

Despite having "banned" any further space marriages, Russia is now offering newly weds the chance to swap Venice or the Niagara Falls for a cosmic honeymoon romance by buying a $40 million ticket to space, officials said Sunday.

Europe's Martian Orbiter and Lander Separate Successfully

The Beagle 2 lander package 20 meters out from Mars Express
London (AFP) Dec 19, 2003
Mars Express spacecraft separated from its probe, Beagle 2, on Friday in a key operation to send the lander towards a landing on the Red Planet next Thursday. "They successfully separated," ESA's director of science, David Southwood, said, in a teleconference to the agency's headquarters from mission control in Darmstadt, Germany. If all goes well, Beagle 2 will glide through the thin Martian atmosphere and land on Dec 25.

    Researchers Say Hybrid Pick And Place Robots Could Be A Third Cheaper

    Robot researchers have long looked at the science of Kinematics and particularly how it applies to parallel robotics as providing novel solutions to robotic problems. But now researchers at the University of Warwick and China's Tianjin University have used kinematic theory to produce a hybrid "rapid pick and place" robot that draws useful traits from both parallel and series robots and costs a third less than similar robots on the market.

    New Study Reports Large-scale Salinity Changes in the Oceans

    Tropical ocean waters have become dramatically saltier over the past 40 years, while oceans closer to Earth's poles have become fresher, scientists reported today in the journal Nature. Earth's warming surface may be intensifying evaporation over oceans in the low latitudes -- raising salinity concentrations there -- and transporting more fresh water vapor via the atmosphere toward Earth's poles.

    This Year's Global Temperature At Third Warmest Recorded
    Geneva - Dec 18, 2003
    The global surface temperature for all of 2003 is expected to be +0.45 C above the 1961-90 annual average, according to the records maintained by Members of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This value makes 2003 the third warmest year just behind 2002 (+0.48 C). The warmest year remains 1998 (+0.55 C).
