This collaboration marks a significant advancement in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for the RCAF, especially across Canada's diverse and challenging territorial landscapes, including the Arctic. The delivery of these systems is scheduled to commence in 2024, with the first MQ-9B SkyGuardian aircraft expected to be delivered to the RCAF in 2028.
Kristin Houston, President of Electro Optical at L3Harris, expressed the company's enthusiasm for this venture: "L3Harris has a longstanding relationship with General Atomics and welcomes new opportunities to integrate our world-class technologies on a leading remotely piloted aircraft." She highlighted the importance of the WESCAM MX-20D systems, noting their role as the "ultimate solution for the world's most advanced and capable platforms, including SkyGuardian."
The partnership between L3Harris, GA-ASI, and Canada is not just about providing advanced technology; it also aligns with Canada's 'Strong, Secure, Engaged' Defence policy. This policy emphasizes major investments in RPAS with ISR capabilities, reflecting a strategic focus on bolstering national security and surveillance competencies.
David R. Alexander, President of GA-ASI, also acknowledged the significance of this collaboration. "GA-ASI is pleased to continue our close relationship with L3Harris, a proven and trusted partner on Team SkyGuardian, to deliver Canada's critical RPAS capability," he said. Alexander underscored the technical capabilities of the EO/IR solution being provided by L3Harris, which is not only cost-effective but also fully compliant with Canadian requirements. He also highlighted the benefits to the Canadian industry and the global RPAS market.
The WESCAM MX-20D, known for its advanced imaging capabilities, will significantly enhance the ISR functions of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian. This integration exemplifies L3Harris' commitment to meeting mission-critical needs and contributing to national defense strategies. Moreover, it showcases the company's broad support across various RCAF fleets, including aircraft like the CP-140 Aurora, CH-146 Griffon, CH-147F Chinook, CH-149 Cormorant, and CC-295 Kingfisher.
This new partnership is more than a transaction; it represents a strategic alignment among L3Harris, GA-ASI, and Canada. It supports not only NORAD, UN, NATO, and other allied operations but also reinforces Canada's commitment to investing in innovative technologies for its defense framework. The integration of L3Harris' EO/IR systems on the MQ-9B SkyGuardian is a testament to the company's ability to meet evolving defense requirements and maintain its status as a leader in aerospace and defense technology.
