Cyborgs Needed For Escape From Earth
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 17, 2010
Scientists have warned for decades that humans are straining the Earth. The global population is increasing, economies are expanding and consumption doesn't appear to be slowing. While save-the-planet campaigns are asking people to save energy, conserve water, recycle and even go vegetarian, some scientists are thinking literally out of this world by suggesting that humans may eventually have to consider leaving Earth if they are to survive as a species. In the September issue of Endeavour, ... read more

JOVIAN DREAMS
Closest Encounter With Jupiter Until 2022
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 16, 2010
Been outside at midnight lately? There's something you really need to see. Jupiter is approaching Earth for the closest encounter between the two planets in more than a decade--and it is dazzling. The night of closest approach is Sept. 20-21st. This is also called "the night of opposition" because Jupiter will be opposite the sun, rising at sunset and soaring overhead at midnight. Among al ... more

US urges NATO to build 'cyber shield'
Brussels (AFP) Sept 15, 2010
NATO must build a "cyber shield" to protect the transatlantic alliance from any Internet threats to its military and economic infrastructures, a top US defence official said Wednesday. Cyber security is a "critical element" for the 28-nation alliance to embrace at its summit of leaders in Lisbon on November 19-20, US Deputy Defence Secretary William Lynn said in Brussels. How Early Plant Life Overcame An Evolutionary Hurdle
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Sep 16, 2010
The diversity of life that can be seen in environments ranging from the rainforests of the Amazon to the spring blooms of the Mohave Desert is awe-inspiring. But this diversity would not be possible if the ancestors of modern plants had just stayed in the water with their green algal cousins. Moving onto dry land required major lifestyle changes to adapt to this new "hostile" environment, ... more

Boeing inks deal to put tourists in space by 2015
Washington (AFP) Sept 16, 2010
US aerospace giant Boeing has forged an alliance with marketing firm Space Adventure to put tourists into low-level orbit in a futuristic capsule by early 2015. The announcement is a boost to President Barack Obama's vision of a private space industry after he scrapped NASA's ambitious but costly plans to build a new generation of rockets to return humans to the moon by 2020. Boeing received 18 million dollars in NASA funding earlier this year to develop plans for a new capsule, the CST-100, whi ... read more
