How Microbes Could Help Colonize Mars
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 10, 2010
Tiny rock-eating microbes could mine precious extraterrestrial resources from Mars and pave the way for the first human colonists. Just don't expect them to transform the red planet's surface into a new Earth on a short deadline, researchers say. One of the most promising planetary colonizers comes in the form of cyanobacteria. The ancient bacteria helped create a habitable Earth with oxygen at least 2.5 billion years ago, and have since colonized practically every possible environment while relyi ... read more

Russia To Test Unmanned Lander For Mars Moon Mission
Moscow, Australia (RIA Novosti) Sep 10, 2010
Russian scientists are due to carry out tests of an unmanned lander that will be used in a 2011 mission to Phobos, one of the moons of Mars. The Phobos-Grunt spacecraft will be sent to the surface of Phobos and will then fly back to Earth with soil samples. "The aim of the test is to narrow down the lander's projected impact location on the surface of the Earth," a statement by the C ... more

Stanford Land-Use Expert Brings Satellite Data Down To Earth
Stanford CA (SPX) Sep 10, 2010
By integrating remote satellite imagery with revelations from door-to-door interviews, Stanford University geographer Eric Lambin and his colleagues are exploring the complex conditions that give rise to a broad range of land-use challenges - from the reforestation of Vietnam to the spread of Lyme disease in Belgium. For decades, orbiting satellites have peered downward to gather informati ... more

Japan rapid scanning system can digitise book in one minute
Tokyo (AFP) Sept 10, 2010
Japanese researchers said Friday they had developed technology to scan a book as fast as a person can flip through it. A prototype ultra-speed scanner capable of digitising a book in one minute will be built within two years, said the chief researcher of the team at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. The "book-flipping scanning" system works ... more

Impact 'fireballs' spotted on Jupiter
Pasadena, Calif. (UPI) Sep 9, 2010
Amateur astronomers have spotted two fireballs lighting up Jupiter's atmosphere, the first time telescopes have caught such small events, scientists say. The two fireballs, which caused fleeting bright spots on Jupiter that were visible through backyard telescopes, occurred June 3 and Aug. 20, a NASA release said Thursday. A paper published in Astrophysical Journal Letters estimated the object causing the June fireball was 30 to 40 feet in diameter, comparable in size to asteroid 2010 RF ... read more
