This Planet Smells Funny
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 14, 2010
Giant planet GJ 436b in the constellation Leo is missing something. Would you believe swamp gas? To the surprise of astronomers who have been studying the Neptune-sized planet using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, GJ 436b has very little methane (CH4). "Methane should be abundant on a planet of this temperature and size, but we found 7000 times less methane than what the models predict," says Kevin Stevenson of the University of Central Florida (UCF). Stevenson was lead author of a paper reporting ... read more

Supernova Shrapnel Found In Meteorite
Chicago IL (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
Scientists have identified the microscopic shrapnel of a nearby star that exploded just before or during the birth of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago. Faint traces of the supernova, found in a meteorite, account for the mysterious variations in the chemical fingerprint of chromium found from one planet and meteorite to another. University of Chicago cosmochemist Nicolas Dauphas and ... more

Scientists find 'rubble pile' asteroids
Tel Aviv, Israel (UPI) Sep 13, 2010
Asteroids made of gravel-sized rocks held together by gravity could hit the Earth like a shotgun blast rather than a single cannonball, Israeli researchers say. It was long theorized that these "rubble pile" asteroids, if they spun fast enough, could throw off material through centrifugal force to create a second collection of rocks - a "separated" twin - that would spin around the su ... more

Satellite Data Reveal Seasonal Pollution Changes Over India
Champaign IL (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
Armed with a decade's worth of satellite data, University of Illinois atmospheric scientists have documented some surprising trends in aerosol pollution concentration, distribution and composition over the Indian subcontinent. In addition to environmental impact, aerosol pollution, or tiny particles suspended in the air, can be detrimental to human health by causing a range of respiratory ... more

French defence official for cooperation with Britain on subs
Paris (AFP) Sept 13, 2010
The chairman of the French national assembly's defence committee said Monday France and Britain might cooperate in the field of nuclear submarines. In an interview with right-wing daily Le Figaro, Guy Teissier of the ruling UMP said the two countries could "avoid redundancies and share their resources," adding: "We can envisage cooperation between our nuclear submarines." Teissier said: "This could only happen in a period of relative peace, like today" because "in case of crisis, each one should ... read more
