NASA plans two challenging spacewalks to fix ISS pump
Washington (AFP) Aug 2, 2010
NASA teams raced Monday to get ready for two challenging spacewalks to fix a pump module on the International Space Station's cooling system that dramatically failed last week. ISS astronauts will need a minimum of two spacewalks to remove the failed unit and replace it with a new one, and teams on the ground and in space were racing to do the first of the spacewalks on Thursday, Courtenay McMillan, the spacewalk flight director for the expedition, told reporters. A Proton-M carrier rocket bearing three Glonass-M navigation satellites will be launched from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan on September 2, Russia's space agency said on Friday. A failure of the cooling system on the International Space Station forced astronauts to re-route power Sunday as NASA planned emergency spacewalks to fix the problem. Opportunity's activities were impacted by the Odyssey spacecraft safe-mode event. However, with the recovery of Odyssey, normal operations with the rover have resumed.
