Cassini Helps With Dune Whodunit
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 30, 2010
The answer to the mystery of dune patterns on Saturn's moon Titan did turn out to be blowing in the wind. It just wasn't from the direction many scientists expected. Basic principles describing the rotation of planetary atmospheres and data from the European Space Agency's Huygens probe led to circulation models that showed surface winds streaming generally east-to-west around Titan's equatorial belt. But when NASA's Cassini spacecraft obtained the first images of dunes on Titan in 2005, the ... read more

DLR Investigates The Existence Of Liquid Salt Solutions On Mars
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Jul 29, 2010
Is it possible that there are salt solutions on Mars that remain liquid despite the extremely low temperatures - a class of fluids known as cryobrines? Research findings at the German Aerospace Center have shown that this is a theoretical possibility. Experiments and modelling have indicated that the required conditions exist, especially during the Martian northern summer at higher latitud ... more

Brilliant Star In A Colourful Neighbourhood
Paris, France (SPX) Jul 29, 2010
A spectacular new image from ESO's Wide Field Imager at the La Silla Observatory in Chile shows the brilliant and unusual star WR 22 and its colourful surroundings. WR 22 is a very hot and bright star that is shedding its atmosphere into space at a rate many millions of times faster than the Sun. It lies in the outer part of the dramatic Carina Nebula from which it formed. Very massive sta ... more

US defends nuclear treaty with Russia against critics
Washington (AFP) July 29, 2010
US President Barack Obama's administration sought Thursday to allay Republican doubts about its new nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia in a bid to ensure it is eventually ratified. "There were no, and I repeat no, secret deals made in connection with the new START treaty, not on missile defense nor on any other issue," US arms control expert Rose Gottemoeller told senators during a hearing on the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. John McCain, a Republican senator who ran against Obama ... read more
