Scots Engineers Prove Space Pioneer's 25-Year-Old Theory
Glasgow, UK (SPX) Jul 27, 2010
When American space pioneer, Dr Robert L Forward, proposed in 1984 a way of greatly improving satellite telecommunications using a new family of orbits, some claimed it was impossible. But now engineers at the University of Strathclyde's Advanced Space Concepts Laboratory have proved that Forward was right. The late Dr Forward - a renowned physicist who worked in the United States and from his second home in Scotland - believed it was possible to use 'displaced orbits' to deploy more satel ... read more

NASA Spacecraft Camera Yields Most Accurate Mars Map Ever
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 26, 2010
A camera aboard NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft has helped develop the most accurate global Martian map ever. Researchers and the public can access the map via several websites and explore and survey the entire surface of the Red Planet. The map was constructed using nearly 21,000 images from the Thermal Emission Imaging System, or THEMIS, a multi-band infrared camera on Odyssey. Researcher ... more

'Pristine' Earth impact crater discovered
Cairo (UPI) Jul 23, 2010
Scientists say a meteoric impact crater found in the remote Egyptian desert may be the best-preserved ever found on Earth. The Kamil crater is pristine, unlike most Earth impact sites that are partially or severely eroded, and maintains much of its structure, including the rays of ejected material thrown from the crater when the space rock hit, SPACE.com reported Thursday. "This ... more

Research Yields Greater Precision In Determining Age of Meteorites
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jul 26, 2010
Researchers have aged dated a very important group of meteorites with far greater precision than previously possible by using a different type of radioactive dating on a particularly difficult type of specimen to study. The project found that the asteroid from which ureilite meteorites are derived differentiated - or separated into parts of different composition - within 5 million years of ... more
