Caltech Team Finds Evidence Of Water In Moon Minerals
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
That dry, dusty moon overhead? Seems it isn't quite as dry as it's long been thought to be. Although you won't find oceans, lakes, or even a shallow puddle on its surface, a team of geologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), working with colleagues at the University of Tennessee, has found structurally bound hydroxyl groups (i.e., water) in a mineral in a lunar rock returned to Earth by the Apollo program. Their findings are detailed in this week's issue of the journal Nature. ... read more

Radio Astronomers Develop New Technique For Studying Dark Energy
Charlottesville VA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
Pioneering observations with the National Science Foundation's giant Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) have given astronomers a new tool for mapping large cosmic structures. The new tool promises to provide valuable clues about the nature of the mysterious "dark energy" believed to constitute nearly three-fourths of the mass and energy of the Universe. Phalanx Sensors Used In Laser Shoot Down Of Airborne Targets
Farnborough, UK (SPX) Jul 20, 2010
Raytheon and a U.S. Navy team used a combined-beam fiber laser to shoot down four unmanned aerial vehicles in flight during an over-the-water engagement. The UAV targets were engaged and destroyed using the Navy's Laser Weapon System guided by Raytheon's Phalanx Close-in Weapon System sensor suite. LaWS is made up of six industrial-use lasers that simultaneously focus on the target. "These engagements validate the operational viability of the Phalanx-LaWS combination at sea," said Dr. Taylor ... read more
