US still has space ambitions: NASA chief

A US decision to scrap plans to return to the moon does not mean it is abandoning its space ambitions, NASA's chief told Congress Tuesday. "We must invest in fundamentally new innovations for space technology and new ways of doing business if we are to develop a space exploration and development program that is truly sustainable over the long term," NASA administrator Charles Bolden said at the National Press Club the day after President Barack Obama outlined new space priorities in the 2011 budget. ... read more

Google has launched a map search service in China for travellers taking trips during the Lunar New Year holiday season, despite a row over cyberattacks and censorship. It's always amusing and sometimes frustrating to see NASA doing something I have suggested in these columns - usually after wasting millions of dollars and years of time on another option. Exactly that has happened with the boosters being designed as part of NASA's plan for manned missions to the Moon and Mars. Over two years ago I wrote about "Shuttle-derived" launch vehicles and concluded: "Any heavy-lift booster based on the failed technology of the Space Shuttle will certainly be too expensive and dangerous to be the basis of a viable manned Moon or Mars program. ... read more
