![]() Washington (AFP) Jan 30, 2010 Facing budgetary constraints, President Barack Obama will scale back US space ambitions, abandoning plans to return to the moon by 2020 and confining NASA to lower orbits for years to come. The shift will be unveiled Monday when Obama presents his 2011 budget blueprint to Congress, according to an external White House advisor. "Constellation is dead," the advisor told AFP on Friday, referring to a program that envisioned using Earth's nearest neighbor as a base for manned expeditions to Mars. ... read more |

Shuttle-Derived Vehicle: Shuttle-Derived Disaster![]() The space community finally seems to be coming to terms with the fact that the President's new space initiative requires the development of some kind of heavy-lift booster, one much more capable than the existing Delta 4H and Atlas 5H vehicles. But the question remains: what kind of booster? A popular answer is: a Shuttle-Derived Vehicle (SDV), similar to the Shuttle-C and Shuttle-Z proposals of years gone by. ... more The VSE Booster Switch ![]() It's always amusing and sometimes frustrating to see NASA doing something I have suggested in these columns - usually after wasting millions of dollars and years of time on another option. Exactly that has happened with the boosters being designed as part of NASA's plan for manned missions to the Moon and Mars. Over two years ago I wrote about "Shuttle-derived" launch vehicles and concluded: "Any heavy-lift booster based on the failed technology of the Space Shuttle will certainly be too expensive and dangerous ... more The Griffin Space Fantasy ![]() The March 14 2007 issue of Aviation Week contained an article by NASA Administrator Mike Griffin which apparently is the most detailed statement yet of his long-range plans. In this article and related press interviews, Griffin makes a case that NASA is not really as underfunded as many critics say, and that the US can afford three major space projects on the scale of Project Apollo over the next 50 years without major budget increases. ... more |

![]() Los Angeles CA (SPX) Jan 27, 2010 The most amazing thing to come out of NASA has been the images from the Hubble Space Telescope. At least to this pair of eyes that were electrified with IMAX's presentation of the "final" Hubble repair mission in Los Angeles this week. We all know 3D makes movies fun, but with the IMAX wrap around the experience truly becomes touchy feely. The Earth in the background while two white spacesuited astronauts glide in. Gold seems to be the primary color of Hubble ... read more |
