NASA'S LCROSS Captures All Phases Of Centaur Impact by Staff Writers
NASA's Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) was a smashing success, returning tantalizing data about the Centaur impact before the spacecraft itself impacted the surface of the moon. Last week, plunging headlong into Cabeus crater, the nine LCROSS instruments successfully captured each phase of the impact sequence: the impact flash ... read moreUAE Pioneers Way Into Space For Arab Countries

New Concept May Enhance Earth-Mars Communication
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 19, 2009Direct communication between Earth and Mars can be strongly disturbed and even blocked by the Sun for weeks at a time, cutting off any future human mission to the Red Planet. An ESA engineer working with engineers in the UK may have found a solution using a new type of orbit combined with continuous-thrust ion propulsion. The European researchers studied a possible solution to a crucial ... more NTU Team Studies World's Fastest Satellite Internet Connection
Nanyang, Japan (SPX) Oct 19, 2009In disaster-struck areas where terrestrial communications may be down, the deployment of rescue teams becomes extremely challenging. A team led by Assistant Professor Lee Yee Hui from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), aims to provide solutions to this problem by using high-speed satellite communication links. The NTU team is working ... more IBEX Explores Galactic Frontier, Releases First-Ever All-Sky Map
Washington DC (SPX) Oct 16, 2009NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft has made it possible for scientists to construct the first comprehensive sky map of our solar system and its location in the Milky Way galaxy. The new view will change the way researchers view and study the interaction between our galaxy and sun. The sky map was produced with data that two detectors on the spacecraft collected ... more |

Moon landing kicked up debris, after all
Silicon Valley, Calif. (UPI) Oct 18, 2009 The spacecraft that plowed into the moon last week kicked up a cloud of dust after all, as NASA had hoped, officials said. Early indications had suggested the Centaur rocket failed to stir up the dust. But the Ames Research Center in Northern California released images Friday showing the rocket indeed had the desired effect, the Los Angeles Times reported. A plume of debris ... more Meteorite smashes windshield
Grimsby, Ontario (UPI) Oct 17, 2009 An Ontario man thought vandals had smashed his mother's car windshield with rocks but it turned out the rocks came from a meteorite, officials in Canada said. The meteorite's fireball lit up the sky over Ontario Sept. 25 with a light 100 times brighter than the moon. Researchers at the University of Western Ontario tracked the remains of the fireball to Grimsby, Ontario, where ... more Experts Detail Need For Sustainable Outer Space Environment
Daejeon, South Korea (SPX) Oct 19, 2009How best to cope with the rising tide of orbital space debris? What international rules of behavior are required for safe operations in space? Can there be a sustainable space environment for world-wide space activities? These and other issues are to be addressed in a special panel discussion on "Achieving a Sustainable Space Environment for Future Space Activities." ... more |
