Boeing Launches Second WorldView EO Satellite
Vandenberg AFB CA (SPX) Oct 12, 2009
Boeing, through its commercial launch business, has successfully launched the WorldView-2 satellite for DigitalGlobe aboard a Delta II rocket. Liftoff occurred at 11:51 a.m. Pacific time from Pad SLC-2W at Vandenberg Air Force Base. The Delta II released WorldView-2 approximately 62 minutes after liftoff, delivering it into a sun-synchronous orbit where the satellite will begin its mission ... read more

NASA Spacecraft Impacts Lunar Crater In Search For Water Ice
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 12, 2009
NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, created twin impacts on the moon's surface early Friday in a search for water ice. Scientists will analyze data from the spacecraft's instruments to assess whether water ice is present. The satellite traveled 5.6 million miles during an historic 113-day mission that ended in the Cabeus crater, a permanently shadowed region ... more

Russia Delays Progress Space Freighter Launch Until 2010
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Oct 12, 2009
The launch of a Progress space freighter to the International Space Station planned for late 2009 has been postponed until 2010, the Russian rocket and space corporation Energia said on Sunday. "We planned the launches of four piloted Soyuz spacecrafts and six Progress carrier rockets for this year, including one space freighter whose launch late this year we have postponed until next year ... more

Love triangle US ex-astronaut loses bid to dismiss case
Orlando, Florida (AFP) Oct 7, 2009
A US judge Wednesday refused to throw out charges against an ex-NASA astronaut who allegedly drove across the country wearing diapers to confront her suspected rival in a love triangle. A defense lawyer for Lisa Nowak, 46, called on the Orlando judge to dismiss the charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary and battery arising out of the bizarre 2007 incident. Nowak, who allegedly wore ... more

Opportunity Knocks with Another Meteorite Find
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 12, 2009
Opportunity has discovered another large (0.5-meter) meteorite. The rover began the approach to this new meteorite, called "Shelter Island," with a 28-meter backward drive on Sol 2022. On Sol 2024, Opportunity turned around with a 2-meter drive to face the meteorite. A final 1-meter bump on Sol 2027 put the meteorite within the work volume of the rover robotic arm (IDD). ... more

Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 12, 2009
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has made a series of observations immediately preceding and following the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) Centaur rocket stage and shepherding spacecraft impacts at the lunar south pole, on October 9 at 7:31 and 7:35 a.m. EDT. Spirit Busy With Antenna Brake Testing
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 12, 2009
Spirit is still currently in X-band fault mode due to a high-gain antenna (HGA) dynamic brake anomaly that first occurred on Sol 2027 and recurred again on Sol 2037. With this HGA fault, all X-band uplinks use the low-gain antenna (LGA), and uplink bandwidth is very limited. Forward-link commanding through Mars Odyssey is being used for all large commanding sequences like data management ... more

NASA downgrades threat of catastrophic asteroid collision
    Washington (AFP) Oct 7, 2009
NASA on Wednesday sharply downgraded the threat that a massive asteroid could slam into Earth in 2036. Apophis, which captured widespread attention when it was discovered in 2004 and it was learned that it might pose a threat to Earth, is two and a half times the size of a football field. There is now a one-in-250,000 chance of a collision with Earth in 2036 -- sharply down from an ... more
