A Woman In Space
Bethesda MD (SPX) Oct 07, 2009
In the early years of the "space race" (1957-1975) two men sought to test a scientifically simple yet culturally complicated theory: that women might be innately better suited for space travel than men. In 1960 the thought of a woman in space was a radical one, and justifiably so. On the ground 75% of American women did not work outside the home and females were banned from military flight ... read more

Study Puts New Spin On Saturn's Rotation
Louisville KY (SPX) Oct 07, 2009
Saturn is rotating five minutes faster than previously thought, a fact that sheds new light on the planet's composition. Wave patterns in Saturn's clouds show that scientists have been using the wrong rotation rate for the planet, said Timothy Dowling, a planetary atmospheres researcher at the University of Louisville, who helped make the discovery. The work by Dowling and his colleagues ... more

'Inverse Energy Cascade' May Energize Jupiter's Jet Streams
Tucson AZ (SPX) Oct 06, 2009
A new analysis of Cassini observations of Jupiter shows that an "inverse energy cascade" mechanism could be supplying the energy that powers and maintains the intense jet streams that typically rip through Jupiter's atmosphere at the same speeds as much shorter-lived hurricanes and tornadoes do on Earth. Exactly what mechanism generates and perpetuates dozens of ferocious, relatively ... more

Herschel Views Deep-Space Pearls On A Cosmic String
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 06, 2009
Herschel has delivered spectacular vistas of cold gas clouds lying near the plane of the Milky Way, revealing intense, unexpected activity. The dark, cool region is dotted with stellar factories, like pearls on a cosmic string. On 3 September, Herschel aimed its telescope at a reservoir of cold gas in the constellation of the Southern Cross near the Galactic Plane. As the telescope scanned ... more
