Spirit Ready To Bump Back Into Action On Mars![]() After Spirit's successful 0.71-meter (28-inch) bump on sol 1010, the team has new targets in the robotic arm's work volume for the first time in 204 sols. There is some interesting light and dark material within arm's reach and this week the team planned a robotic arm campaign including a microscopic imager mosaic, four hours of alpha particle X-ray spectrometer integration and 43 hours of Moessbauer spectrometer integration. Spirit is receiving a little over 320 Watt-hours now and is able to occasionally use the Moessbauer or alpha particle X-ray spectrometer overnight. SciSys Wins Key Technology Role In Support Of Europen Mars Rover ![]() Space software experts SciSys have been awarded a key role in a 1.7 million technology development programme supporting Europe's return to Mars. The programme sponsor (the UK Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council or PPARC) has given its highest priority to a SciSys-led development known as the "autonomous robotic scientist". This development includes academic support from Aberystwyth, Leicester and Strathclyde Universities. Cluster Takes A New Look At The Plasmasphere ![]() Using dedicated multipoint analysis tools developed for the ESA/NASA Cluster mission, scientists have unraveled properties of density structures in three dimensions on large, medium and small scales in the outer regions of the plasmasphere. Together with remote sensing data collected by the NASA IMAGE mission, these results show that this is a surprisingly dynamic place! |
Russia To Lift Glonass Restrictions For Accurate Civilian Use![]() Russia will lift all precision restrictions from 2007 in the use of military-controlled Glonass to enable accurate and unlimited commercial use of the global positioning system, the defense minister said Monday. Glonass, a Russian version of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), is designed for both military and civilian purposes, and allows users around the globe to identify their positions in real time. It can also be used in geological prospecting. China To Launch 2 Satellites For Compass Navigation System ![]() China is expected to launch two navigation satellites early next year as part of a plan to build a global navigation positioning network, aerospace insiders say. The launch of the two "Beidou" (Compass) satellites, scheduled for the beginning of 2007, is expected to cover China and parts of neighbouring countries by 2008, before being expanded into a global system, the sources confirmed over the weekend. James Van Allen And Astrobiology ![]() A little before midnight, on January 31, 1958, a countdown reached zero and a rocket hesitated on its launch pad at Cape Canaveral. Around the Cape, birds soared screeching into the night sky, suddenly awoken by the deafening engine and its dazzling flame. The rocket ascended with its unique payload, scientific instruments of a kind never flown in space. On the ground the scientists and engineers watched as the exhaust flame rose overhead, 60 miles above Earth. |
