Progress 21 Heads For Space Station

Roscosmos launched a pilotless Progress spacecraft toward a Wednesday rendezvous with the International Space Station. The spacecraft lifted off at 9:03 p.m. Central Asian Time, from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The 21st Progress to visit the station is carrying some small crustaceans for a Russian scientific experiment called Aquarium, which will examine the stability of closed ecological systems in microgravity.

    Mars Express Views Nanedi Valles

    ESA's Mars Express orbiter captured this image with its High Resolution Stereo Camera that shows the Nanedi Valles valley system, a steep-sided feature that may have been formed in part by free-flowing water. The HRSC actually obtained the image on Oct. 3, 2004, during orbit 905 at a ground resolution of approximately 18 meters (59 feet) per pixel, but ESA has not released it until now. The image has been rotated 90 degrees clockwise, so that north is to the right.

    The Binary Research Institute (BRI) has found that orbital characteristics of the recently discovered planetoid, "Sedna", demonstrate the possibility that our sun might be part of a binary star system. A binary star system consists of two stars gravitationally bound orbiting a common center of mass.

    GLOBE At Night Reaches More Than 18000 Participants On Six Continents

    More than 18,000 citizen-scientists in 96 countries submitted 4,591 observations of the darkness of their local night skies during the 10-day GLOBE at Night event last month. The GLOBE at Night Web site received data from all 50 U.S. states and from every continent except Antarctica (where the constellation used for the project was not visible).

    Thaicom 5 Arrives At Kourou

    Alcatel Alenia Space's Thaicom 5 satellite has arrived at its launch site in Kourou, the company said Monday. The launch, aboard an Ariane 5 ECA rocket and paired with the Satmex 6 satellite, is slated for May 26.

    XTAR Begins Commercial Service On XTAR-LANT

    XTAR, LLC, a joint venture between Loral Space & Communications and HISDESAT, today announced that the second component of its X-band satellite network, XTAR-LANT, has completed in-orbit testing and has entered full commercial service.     Columbus Lab Ready For Delivery To ISS

    ESA said Monday that technicians in Bremen, Germany, have completed final integration of the Columbus laboratory for the International Space Station. The facility will be shipped to Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at the end of next month to prepare for its launch in late 2007 aboard one of NASA's space shuttles.
