After a long period of post-Shenzhou 6 silence, more details about China's next manned space missions are emerging. Statements from the Chinese media, echoed in the Western aerospace media, have revealed the most ambitious set of plans yet revealed by Chinese officials. But as usual, the statements are short and somewhat vague. Much is open to interpretation.

    Cassini Sees Giant Lightning Storm On Saturn

    Researchers are tracking an electrical storm on Saturn that has raged since at least Jan. 23 and covers an area larger than the continental United States, with lightning bolts more than 1,000 times stronger than those seen on Earth. The storm is a possible source of radio emissions thought to come from electrical discharges located deep within Saturn's atmosphere.

    Reproducing 'GEMS' In The Lab

Reporting in an upcoming issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics, the team said they have produced a compound called GEMS - for glass with embedded metal and sulfides - a major component of interplanetary dust.
