PLD Space unveils plan for reusable MIURA Next launchers and LINCE manned capsule

PLD Space presented its strategic vision at the Beyond event, hosted at the company's new headquarters in Elche, Spain, to celebrate the first anniversary of the MIURA 1 launch. During the event, the company highlighted the significant advances in the MIURA 5 program, with a goal of launching by late 2025.

In addition to MIURA 5, PLD Space revealed two ambitious projects: MIURA Next, a new line of large reusable launchers, and LINCE, Europe's first private manned capsule. "We will be able to launch any type of payload that serves the market, providing space transportation solutions to meet all demands," said Executive President Ezequiel Sanchez.

Progress on MIURA 5
Following MIURA 1's successful launch in October 2023, PLD Space has focused on advancing the MIURA 5, achieving key milestones in propulsion, structural design, and reusability. CEO Raul Torres emphasized the TEPREL-C engine, the company's liquid-fuel engine developed in-house, which was tested during the MIURA 1 flight. This engine positions PLD Space as one of only three European companies capable of developing liquid-fuel engines.

"The TEPREL-C engine, with 190 kN of thrust, is the heart of MIURA 5," explained Torres. The new MIURA 5 1.2 model will feature a re-entry and recovery system, allowing the launcher to land, reducing costs and increasing launch frequency.

State-of-the-art production facility
The Beyond event was held at PLD Space's newly opened 12,500 m2 factory in Elche, designed to produce six MIURA 5 launchers and 60 TEPREL-C engines by 2025. This facility integrates cutting-edge automation technologies and industrial processes. Raul Verdu, CBDO of PLD Space, explained, "MIURA 5 is designed to provide reliable, tailored, and high-frequency launch services."

On the commercial side, Verdu announced that the company has secured contracts worth over 596 million euros, with MIURA 5's first commercial flights set for 2026.

New horizons with MIURA Next and LINCE
Looking ahead, PLD Space aims to address current market demands with MIURA Next, a family of large reusable launchers, including MIURA Next, MIURA Next Heavy, and MIURA Next Super Heavy, capable of lifting up to 50 tonnes to orbit. The first MIURA Next flight is scheduled for 2030. According to Torres, "MIURA Next Super Heavy will be one of the most powerful rockets in the world," designed to carry 16 tonnes to the Moon and 13 tonnes to Mars.

PLD Space is also making strides with LINCE, the first private European manned capsule. This capsule, with an 8m capacity, will allow Europe to conduct manned space missions independently. Initial unmanned tests are planned for 2025, with an orbital flight targeted for 2030.

SPARK program inspires future space talent
PLD Space also presented the results of its SPARK program, which provides free launch services for educational and scientific projects. Spain's first female astronaut, Sara Garcia-Alonso, praised the initiative, noting its role in inspiring future generations. The program has received 98 applications from 24 countries, with submissions open to schools and institutions until November 15.

The event concluded with remarks from Spain's Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, who emphasized the country's supportive ecosystem for advancing space exploration. "We have a much better organised society to make it possible for dreams to come true," she said, acknowledging the work of PLD Space.
