Gilmour Space selected to build bus for emissions monitoring satellite

Sydney, Australia (SPX) Nov 21, 2024

Gilmour Space has announced that its ElaraSat satellite bus will be utilized in a demonstration mission aimed at delivering high-resolution data on methane and carbon emissions from space.

The mission, spearheaded by Perth-based Earth observation company LatConnect60, is designed to gather essential emissions data to aid the agriculture, resources, and other sectors in their efforts to achieve emissions reduction and NetZero goals.

As part of the Australian Space Agency's International Space Investment India Projects initiative, the mission will feature LatConnect60's Short-Wave Infrared Imagery Satellite (SWIRSAT). Equipped with advanced sensors and an edge computer supplied by Sydney-based Spiral Blue, SWIRSAT will be integrated onto Gilmour Space's ElaraSat platform at the Australian Space Manufacturing Network (ASMN) facility in Queensland. The satellite will be launched by Skyroot Aerospace from India.

"SWIRSAT will generate critical insights from very high spatial resolution Earth observation data in the short wave infrared range," explained Venkat Pillay, CEO and Founder of LatConnect60. "It will pinpoint and quantify source-level carbon emissions at a high accuracy, filling a key data gap in the market from Low Earth Orbit (LEO)."

Mark Grimminck, Head of Satellites at Gilmour Space, highlighted the importance of the project, stating: "This 100-kilogram prototype satellite will be a key milestone in LatConnect60's vision to deploy a LEO constellation that will deliver vital Earth observation data and insights, starting with carbon emissions monitoring, to both government and commercial customers.

"We're excited to be supporting this important capability for Australia and beyond."
