German army reveals new fault in problem-plagued Eurofighter

Israel receives upgraded C-130 transport
Tel Aviv, Israel (UPI) Oct 14, 2015 - The Israeli Air Force reports that it has received its first C-130H Hercules transport it had modernized by Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries.

The aircraft has new radar, digital screens, advanced systems and a new main wing.

The IAF said the upgrades will help keep the plane flying for decades.

"We celebrate the completion of the process and the beginning of the meaningful period of integration," said Brig. Lihu Hacohen, the commander of Nevatim Airbase, during a ceremony celebrating the improved C-130. "We are going out on a new road, with a new and better fighting aircraft."

Added an unidentified Israeli Air Force lieutenant colonel in charge of a C-130 squadron: "With the improved C-130 we can perform our missions in a better, simpler way. We get excellent aircraft with high operational capabilities.

"At the end of the day we will have a strong squadron which flies highly advanced planes. We assume that the C-130 will fly until 2040 and even further."

Germany's army on Wednesday confirmed yet another problem with Eurofighter combat planes, a day after it said it was suspending deliveries of the aircraft over a technical flaw.

An army spokesman said the external fuel tank of one of the jets fell off as it was preparing for takeoff last week.

"The aircraft was immobilised and tests are under way," the spokesman, Roman Ladenko, told AFP, confirming a report in the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

As a result of the incident, which occurred at an air base in Estonia, the army had stopped Eurofighters from flying unless their external fuel tanks were removed.

"That's a problem because without these external tanks, our fighter planes do not have sufficient autonomy to fly over the Baltic Sea," Ladenko said.

On Tuesday the army said it was halting Eurofighter deliveries over a technical fault in the fuselage.

The Eurofighter consortium on Wednesday told AFP that there was indeed a "non-conformity" issue with four drill holes on the back of the fuselage.

Nevertheless, the group's spokesman Theodor Benien said the issue had "not affected the safety of aircraft delivered to our customers".

The Eurofighter Typhoon is Europe's largest collaborative defence programme -- a partnership between Italy's Finmeccanica, Britain's BAE Systems and European aerospace group Airbus.

But its woes have allowed its competitors -- Boeing's Super Hornet F18 and France's Dassault Rafale -- to pick up several major orders.

In what might be another blow for the European consortium, the newspaper Die Welt reported on Wednesday that the group's plans to develop a new radar for the plane were facing several months of delay.

The plan for a new radar was announced officially only in November 2014, but it is already running "five months late" with a budget overrun of about 80 million euros, the newspaper reported, quoting a confidential report of the German defence ministry.

Germany's defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen, has declined comment on the report.

Germany freezes delivery of Typhoon fighters
Bonn, Germany (UPI) Oct 14, 2015 - Germany's Air Force is temporarily halting the delivery of Eurofighter Typhoon jets because of technical problems with the combat aircraft.

Notice of the delivery freeze was announced Tuesday by the Ministry of Defense.

Germany currently has 33 of the aircraft still on order from Eurofighter, the holding company for a consortium comprised of Britain's BAE Systems, Italy's Finmeccanica and the multinational corporation Airbus.

Eurofighter said the flaw concerns four holes drilled for bolts that attach the plane's fins to the rear fuselage. The flaw was discovered on the assembly line and does not poses a flight-safety hazard.

"...there are no operational or life-time limitations to the Eurofighter Typhoon," it said in a news release. "A way forward to deliver further aircraft is in discussion with the customers who have already been notified."

A total of 446 Typhoons have been delivered since 2003 to six countries: Germany, Britain, Italy, Spain, Austria and Saudi Arabia. Oman ordered the Typhoon in 2012.
