The European Defence Fund (EDF) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative with the CONVOY project, spearheaded by the multinational technology firm GMV. With an allocation of approximately euro 4.99 million from the EU, CONVOY stands out as a pivotal endeavor within the EDF's 2022 call for proposals, marking a significant step in the European Commission's inaugural Technological Challenge aimed at the detection of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

In today's complex defense landscape, European ground forces are increasingly confronted with sophisticated threats, notably IEDs and landmines. These perilous devices are among the chief contributors to casualties within defense ranks, underscoring the urgent need for advanced detection solutions. CONVOY's mission is to enhance the safety and operational efficacy of military personnel by addressing this critical challenge.

GMV coordinates the CONVOY project, working in concert with nine other eminent entities from five European nations, including Aalborg Universitet, Airbus Defense and Space, Applied Intelligence Analytics, Eviden, Aurea Avionics, Ecole Royale Militaire - Koninklijke Militaire School, Fraunhofer-Gessellschaft, Numalis, and XenomatiX. This strategic alliance amalgamates diverse expertise and experience, bolstering the project's capacity to tackle the intricate task of explosive threat detection.

The collaboration's kickoff meeting with the European Commission lays the groundwork for developing an integrated system that combines cutting-edge technologies to enhance detection and response capabilities against hidden threats like IEDs and landmines. This system will employ intelligent robots, drones, and a broad spectrum of detection technologies, leveraging artificial intelligence and cloud technology in novel ways.

Central to CONVOY's objectives is the exploration of artificial intelligence's potential in identifying, recognizing, and neutralizing concealed dangers. The project will utilize cloud infrastructure as a foundational element for sensor learning, enabling continuous and efficient adaptation to the evolving menace of explosive attacks.

As part of the EU Technological Challenge, CONVOY will participate in four operational campaigns, facilitating the assessment and evolution of systems throughout the project's lifecycle. GMV's role as coordinator underscores its significance as a pivotal European defense partner.

GMV's involvement extends beyond CONVOY, with participation in six projects under the EDF 2022 call, cumulatively accounting for 21% of the budget allocated for 2022 projects. The defense and security sector has emerged as a vital growth area for GMV, evidenced by a 50% workforce expansion over the past five years, surpassing 3,000 employees-a figure anticipated to grow with these new initiatives.

Jose Prieto, GMV's Director of Business Development and Institutional Affairs for the Defense and Security sector, emphasizes the strategic importance of participating in EU projects within the European Defence Funds framework. This engagement not only advances GMV's internationalization and strategic area reinforcement but also provides indispensable added value in securing project bids.

CONVOY's multi-sensor, multi-platform approach represents a significant advancement in battlefield technology. Integrating eight distinct sensor technologies across various platforms, including unmanned aerial and ground systems as well as manned vehicles, the project epitomizes innovation in defense technology. The CONVOY Tactical Cloud will facilitate the seamless integration of components, subsystems, and elements, ensuring interoperability and scalability through open architecture and adherence to standards.

Supported by the European Union and the collective expertise of its participants, the CONVOY project heralds a new era in technological innovation for security, charting a path toward more effective and adaptive solutions for explosive threat detection in the 21st century.
