With its headquarters experiencing rapid expansion, Cailabs recently inaugurated an office in Washington, D.C., and appointed Jeff Huggins as President of its U.S. operations. The company's workforce expanded with 25 new hires in 2023, including Optics Engineer Ashley Fabioux, and plans to add 30 more in 2024.
Cailabs is at the forefront of several projects, such as the Obs2OGS project with Raymetrics and the European Space Agency (ESA) to upgrade Greek observatories for enhanced optical communication. Another notable initiative is 'Project Corossol,' funded by France's BPI and CNES, aimed at providing connectivity to low-Earth orbit satellite operators through the development of industrial OGS.
Jean-Francois Morizur, co-founder and CEO of Cailabs, highlighted the company's pivotal role in the advancing photonics landscape, noting the growing demand for photonics solutions in Europe and the United States. This demand is reflected in the broader market, with the global photonics market projected to reach USD 2.25 trillion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 6.5%.
The sector's growth is underscored by advancements in laser technology, including SpaceX's laser system for Starlink, which delivers significant data volumes daily. Additionally, Amazon's Project Kuiper and TNO's groundbreaking satellite-to-ground laser communication underscore the technological strides in this field.
Cailabs' unique optical ground stations, capable of compensating for atmospheric turbulence, have garnered attention from the U.S. defense sector, highlighting the company's strategic importance in the evolving laser technology landscape.
