TerraSAR-X And TanDEM-X Flying In Close Formation
Berlin, Germany (SPX) Oct 19, 2010
The German Aerospace Center and the space company Astrium have recently taken an important step forward in their mission to create a three-dimensional map of the world. On 14 October 2010, the radar satellite TanDEM-X moved into close formation with its 'twin', TerraSAR-X. Before this, the two satellites were orbiting 20 kilometres apart - a flight time of almost three seconds. Now, there are only 350 metres separating the pair, which means their antennas are able to acquire radar images of ... read more

Emerging Underground Aquifers Formed Martian Lakes
Tucson AZ (SPX) Oct 19, 2010
Researchers at the Planetary Science Institute have found a new explanation for how seas and lakes may have once developed on Mars. J. Alexis Palmero Rodriguez, research scientist at PSI, has been studying the Martian northern lowlands region, which contains extensive sedimentary deposits that resemble the abyssal plains of Earth's ocean floors. It is also like the floors of other basins o ... more

How To Weigh A Star Using A Moon
Boston MA (SPX) Oct 18, 2010
Boston MA (SPX) Oct 18, 2010 How do astronomers weigh a star that's trillions of miles away and way too big to fit on a bathroom scale? In most cases they can't, although they can get a best estimate using computer models of stellar structure. New work by astrophysicist David Kipping says that in special cases, we can weigh a star directly. If the star has a planet, and that planet has a ... more
