Space Debris' Enviromental Impact
Bethesda MD (SPX) Oct 15, 2010
For the past 50+ years space-faring nations of the world have been trashing the near-Earth space without regard to future effects on our environment. Almost every satellite launched into Earth orbit has resulted in multiple objects that have become RSOs (resident space objects), otherwise known as space debris. During the first 40 or so years of accumulating this debris, it was little more ... more

Rover Nears 15 Miles Of Driving On Mars
Pasadena CA (JPL) Oct 15, 2010
Opportunity drove only once this past week, nearing the 24-kilometer (15-mile) odometry mark. On Sol 2382 (Oct. 6, 2010), the rover covered over 94 meters (308 feet) on her trek to Endeavour crater. With the use of autonomous navigation, the rover collects many more data products which fill the available flash memory. So occasionally, time has to be taken to work off this data backlo ... more

Satellites join up to map Earth
Berlin (UPI) Oct 15, 2010
Two German satellites orbiting within 380 yards of each other are preparing to create the most detailed map ever made of Earth's entire surface, officials said. The radar satellites TanDEM-X and TerraSAR-X will make 3-D maps of the surface as they orbit the globe, sweeping around the planet at more than 14,000 mph, the BBC reported. TerraSAR-X was launched in 2007 and TanDEM-X wa ... more

New Delhi (AFP) Oct 17, 2010
India said Sunday it had completed a maiden test flight of an indigenously-built unmanned drone developed as part of the country's efforts to reduce military imports. "The aircraft was flown in a manner exactly as planned, up to a height of 3,000 feet (900 metres), remained airborne for 30 minutes and completed all mission requirements," Defence Research and Development Organisation spokesman Ravi Kumar Gupta said of Saturday's flight. The drone, named Rustom, has a maximum flight time of 15 hou ... read more
