NASA's WISE Mission To Complete Extensive Sky Survey
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 19, 2010
NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, will complete its first survey of the entire sky on July 17, 2010. The mission has generated more than one million images so far, of everything from asteroids to distant galaxies. "Like a globe-trotting shutterbug, WISE has completed a world tour with 1.3 million slides covering the whole sky," said Edward Wright, the principal investigator of the mission at the University of California, Los Angeles. Some of these images have been processe ... read more

Russia To Start Testing New Angara Rocket In 2013
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Jul 16, 2010
Test launches of Russia's new booster rocket, the Angara, are to start in 2013, the rocket designer said on Thursday. Vladimir Nesterov, head of the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center, said the rocket assembly would be completed in the first quarter of 2011, adding that the first-stage engine was "99% ready" and the second-stage engine had already been tested three times ... more

NASA Finds Super-Hot Planet With Unique Comet-Like Tail
Boston MA (SPX) Jul 16, 2010
Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have confirmed the existence of a baked object that could be called a "cometary planet." The gas giant planet, named HD 209458b, is orbiting so close to its star that its heated atmosphere is escaping into space. Observations taken with Hubble's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) suggest powerful stellar winds are sweeping the cast-off atmosph ... more

A Puzzling Collapse Of Earth's Upper Atmosphere
Huntsville AL (SPX) Jul 16, 2010
NASA-funded researchers are monitoring a big event in our planet's atmosphere. High above Earth's surface where the atmosphere meets space, a rarefied layer of gas called "the thermosphere" recently collapsed and now is rebounding again. "This is the biggest contraction of the thermosphere in at least 43 years," says John Emmert of the Naval Research Lab, lead author of a paper announcing ... more

New Zealand inventors produce bionic legs for paraplegics
Wellington (AFP) July 16, 2010
Two New Zealand inventors have produced what they claim are the world's first robotic legs to help paraplegics walk again. The bionic legs were road-tested publicly for the first time Thursday by 23-year-old Hayden Allen who was told five years ago he would never walk again after being paralysed from the chest down in a motorcycle accident. Allen said the experience of being able to stand up and walk when strapped into his robotic legs was fantastic and he felt like a normal human being again. ... read more
