18-Month Mars500 Mission Has Begun

Hatch closed: 18-month Mars500 mission has begun. Mars500, the first full-length simulated mission to Mars, started today in Moscow at 13:49 local time (11:49 CET), when the six-man crew entered their 'spacecraft' and the hatch was closed. The experiment will run until November next year. Thales Alenia Space has won a contract worth 2.1 billion dollars (1.7 billion euros) for a giant programme to build 81 communications satellites for US group Iridium, Iridium said on Wednesday. The European group beat US company Lockheed Martin in bidding for the work.
