Tensions rise over 'Airbnb vote' in San Francisco

Twitter trades stars for hearts, favorites for likes
Washington (AFP) Nov 3, 2015 - Like it or not, Twitter on Tuesday retired its star button that users click to "favorite" a post and replaced it with a heart.

The messaging platform said the new system of "likes," which is also used by Facebook, offers a better way for users to express their views. But it quickly sparked an outcry from some users.

"Hearts? Really Twitter? Why not lollipops, or sugardrop fairies made of rainbow smiles, sparkles, and a generous dollop of dreams?" one user wrote.

"There are too many love hearts on Twitter now, I feel like I'm reading text messages between a 12 year old couple," another tweeted.

Twitter said the move was designed to be easier to understand for users around the world.

"We want to make Twitter easier and more rewarding to use, and we know that at times the star could be confusing, especially to newcomers," product manager Akarshan Kumar said in a blog post.

"You might like a lot of things, but not everything can be your favorite."

Kumar said the heart "is a universal symbol that resonates across languages, cultures and time zones."

"The heart is more expressive, enabling you to convey a range of emotions and easily connect with people. And in our tests, we found that people loved it," he added.

The heart symbol had already been used on Twitter's Periscope livestream app, and it now will appear on Twitter and Vine, the app for short videos.

The idea has been around for months, and key Twitter investor Chris Sacca suggested such a change in a June blog post, saying favorite was "too strong a word."

"Favorite is a superlative. It implies a ranking. In the early days of Twitter many of us interpreted the word literally and only keep a few tweets in our favorites that were truly, well, our favorites," he wrote.

"Today, many of my friends and I use the star as a 'like' button equivalent... However, the majority of users are baffled by favorites and they don't end up using the star much, if at all."

- 'Horrible things' -

A Twitter "poll" -- another new feature to boost user interest -- found 88 percent preferred "favorites" and only 12 percent "likes," with some 28,000 users voting.

Some critics said the change puts people in an awkward position of liking tweets related to tragic news events.

"For journalists that means it'll look like we 'love' horrible things," tweeted Bel Trew, a Middle East reporter for The Times of London

Similar complaints have been voiced about Facebook's "like" button and the social network has been studying other options.

But Facebook has said there will be no "dislike" button. Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has said users wanted "the ability to express empathy" because "not every moment is a good moment."

Twitter has been struggling to boost its user base in the face of sluggish growth compared with that of other social networks. It recently brought co-founder Jack Dorsey back as its chief executive on a permanent basis.

In its latest quarterly update, Twitter reported 320 million monthly active users -- only modestly up from 316 million in the past quarter and 11 percent higher than a year ago.

San Franciscans vote Tuesday on a measure to limit short-term housing rentals in what is seen as a referendum on surging startup Airbnb.

The vote is a key test of sentiment over a simmering housing crisis and on Airbnb in a city experiencing waves of investments in tech startups, pressuring an already tight real estate market.

In the "Proposition F" referendum, property dwellers would see a 75-day limit per year for rentals under 30 days, regardless of whether the property is "hosted" or not.

That would be a significant change in the current law allowing 90 days per year if the resident is absent and places no limits on renting a "hosted" spare room.

Airbnb, a San Francisco-based online service allowing property dwellers and owners to rent a room or entire home for short periods, would be the most affected if the law passes.

That would not trouble backers of the referendum, who claim the "sharing economy" startup has exacerbated the housing crisis in the California city.

"At a time when San Francisco faces a severe affordable housing crisis, an increasing number of existing apartments are being illegally offered and advertised as short-term rentals on websites, such as Airbnb and VRBO," the referendum text reads.

According to the coalition backing the measure, Share Better SF, up to 10,000 homes in San Francisco are now listed as short-term rentals, 70 percent of which are entire units.

"This eliminates rent-controlled and affordable housing, driving up rent and causing displacement, including evictions of seniors and the disabled," says a statement from the coalition of renters, property owners and labor unions from the hotel and restaurant sector.

Airbnb critics claim the service unfairly competes with hotels, which face stricter regulations and taxes.

Some also claim the startup provides an incentive for property owners to toss out long-term residents and convert lodgings to short-term rentals, creating an upheaval in the traditional market for rentals.

The referendum aims "to prohibit converting rental units from residential use to tourist use, and help preserve the availability of housing in San Francisco," according to the wording.

- Driving prices up -

Housing prices have been surging in recent years in the region around San Francisco and nearby Silicon Valley.

Some former low-income neighborhoods of San Francisco are being transformed by the arrival of highly paid technology workers.

According to the real estate website Zillow, the average rent in the city in September was $4,390 per month, compared with less than $3,000 five years ago and an average nationwide of $1,386.

But Airbnb says it is not to blame for the housing crisis, and claims its service helps people by providing income to those who need it.

"Home sharing is making it possible for thousands of middle class families to make ends meet and stay in the city, while Proposition F is a hotel-backed measure that is falsely drawing a line between regular San Franciscans sharing their homes and a decades-long housing crisis," said company spokesman Christopher Nulty.

Airbnb has been a major contributor to the "no" campaign, which has raises $8 million compared with just $800,000 for the backers, according to election filings.

Opponents of the proposal contend it would raise privacy concerns, place a paperwork burden on property dwellers and encourage neighbors to snoop or file lawsuits.

"What if the government required you to report when you're sleeping in your own home... or even in you own bed?" says a "no" campaign ad.

"If Proposition F passes, San Francisco will be the only city in the country where residents will be forced to do just that. It's just too extreme."

Surveys indicate the measure is likely to fail -- 55 percent opposed in a poll last month compared with 36 percent supporting.

It will nonetheless be a key moment for Airbnb, which calls the city its home but operates in some 34,000 cities around the world.

Earlier this year, the startup raised $1.5 billion in new capital, sending its value up to $25.5 billion.

The company was launched in 2008 and now has some 40 million users worldwide.

Amazon opens first brick-and-mortar bookstore
San Francisco (AFP) Nov 3, 2015 - Twenty years after pioneering the virtual bookstore, Amazon Tuesday went brick-and-mortar.

The online giant, which led the bookselling industry's shift to the Internet, opened its first physical bookstore in its hometown of Seattle, Washington.

"These aren't metaphorical doors: these real, wooden doors are the entrance to our new store in Seattle's University Village," the company said on a web page for the shop.

The store, called Amazon Books, "is a physical extension of Amazon.com" which "integrates the benefits of offline and online book shopping," the company said.

"The books in our store are selected based on Amazon.com customer ratings, pre-orders, sales, popularity on Goodreads and our curators' assessments. These are fantastic books! Most have been rated four stars or above, and many are award-winners."

Amazon said prices will be identical online and at the bookstore, and it encouraged customers to use its mobile application to read reviews and get more information about items.

"Amazon Books is a store without walls -- there are thousands of books available in store and millions more available at Amazon.com," the statement said.

"Walk out of the store with a book; lighten your load and buy it online."

The stores will also be selling Amazon-branded devices such as the Kindle, Echo, Fire TV and Fire Tablet.

The move comes amid competition from retailers which seek to use a physical as well as online presence to meet customer needs.

Amazon earlier this year opened a campus store at Purdue University allowing students to pick up and return textbooks. And reports have said the company has been looking at other kinds of physical stores.

Created in 1994, Amazon began selling books online in 1995 and quickly expanded to a variety of other goods and services, with groceries among its most recent additions.

Amazon is also looking to launch quick delivery with drones.
