Israel should prepare itself for a possible attack on the Jewish state with non-conventional weapons, Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Tuesday. "The fact that we are today facing Qassams and Katyushas should not make us forget the necessity to prepare for bigger threats in the future that could result in a war using non-conventional weapons," he told army radio.

He was referring to homemade rockets used against Israel by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip and projectiles launched by Lebanon's Hezbollah during this summer's war with the Jewish state.

Israel, considered the sole if undeclared nuclear armed power in the Middle East, has followed with increasing concern arch-foe Iran's nuclear program following repeated threats by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to wipe the Jewish state off the map.

A Year Of Tragic Defiance In The Middle East
New York (UPI) Dec 05, 2006
I admit that I find myself struggling to find a way or a phrase to summarize the sorry state of affairs in the Middle East in 2006; they seem to defy not only logic but the instinct to survive. How do you describe a region that has gone mad, setting itself on a self-destructive path and racing headlong toward the precipice? How, when, and by whom can this madness be stopped, where can we begin, and what is to be done?
