Fill It Up With Kero ![]() Kerosene -- almost as common to American life as gasoline -- is again being considered as a fuel for two main engine candidates for a second generation reusable launch vehicle, now in development by NASA's Space Launch Initiative. Sick Or Sleepy -- No Option In Space ![]() You've trained for years for the ride of a lifetime, been chosen to serve in an elite corps, trained even more right up until launch, and what happens during your first couple of days in orbit? You're sick! Mirror Matter And Interstellar Pioneers ![]() The interactions of the known elementary particles (such as the electron, proton etc) violate mirror reflection symmetry, yet respect just about every other plausible symmetry. India, Pakistan Back To Sparring ![]() An Indian non-governmental group called the Kashmir Committee is holding "unconditional" talks with the main alliance of separatist groupings in the Kashmir Valley, but the chances of a breakthrough leading to its participation in the September-October elections there are dimming. A CCD That Can Stand Up To Cosmic Rays ![]() A single instrument aboard SNAP, the proposed SuperNova/Acceleration Probe, will make it unique among satellites: its billion-pixel astronomical camera, the GigaCAM. Built from an array of revolutionary Berkeley Lab CCDs developed by Stephen Holland and his colleagues in the Lab's Engineering and Physics Divisions, the GigaCAM will be the largest and most sensitive astronomical CCD imager ever constructed. Atomic Anchors To Quicken Computer Boot-Up ![]() A way to help next-generation computers boot up instantly, making entire memories immediately available for use, has been developed by researchers at Sandia National Laboratories and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
