U.S. Air Force orders more JDAM bomb kits

The U.S. Air Force placed a $262 million order with Boeing for the delivery of Joint Direct Attack Munition tailkits.

Under the The order, placed under an existing contract, Boeing will provide strap-on inertial guidance kits to enhance the capability of receiving guidance updates from Global Positioning Systems to increase weapon accuracy.

Work will be performed at St. Louis, Mo. The U.S. Defense Department expects the work to be completed by November 2017.

Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM, kits convert existing unguided bombs into precision-guided "smart bombs."

GPS aids an inertial navigation system to enhance guidance. Targets can be engaged with JDAM after coordinates are loaded into the aircraft before takeoff, manually before the weapon is launched, and automatically entered with onboard aircraft sensors. Information is passed from the aircraft to the weapon.

Austrian Army orders Saab ammunition
Linkoping, Sweden (UPI) Nov 24, 2015 - The Austrian military has ordered an undisclosed quantity of ammunition for Carl-Gustaf man-portable weapon systems from Saab of Sweden.

Information on the monetary value of the contract was not provided but Saab said the 84mm ammunition would be delivered during 2016-2017.

"The Carl-Gustaf is a world-leading weapon system which has repeatedly proven itself in the most demanding environments as a versatile, powerful tool for the infantry soldier," says Torbjörn Saxmo, head of Saab business unit Ground Combat.

The Carl-Gustaf system is a recoilless rifle primarily for use against armor. It can be fired by one or two soldiers and has a firing rate of as many as six rounds per minute.
