Taipei (AFP) Feb 4, 2008 Taiwan's economics ministry said Monday it expects output from the island's flat panel display industry will exceed two trillion Taiwan dollars (62.11 billion US) in 2011. In 2007, the industry churned out 1.69 trillion dollars in output, up 33 percent from 2006, the ministry cited Display Search data as saying. The ministry said the flat panel sector had been listed as a star industry for the government to push for. "We are also assisting the sector to enhance research and development and reinforce valued-added production," an official from the ministry's industrial development bureau said. The ministry said the sector was expected to benefit from growing demand for thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) TVs which have become the driver of the industry's growth. According to the ministry, TFT-LCD TV global sales in 2010 are expected to rise to 146 million units from 79.85 million units recorded in 2007.
