Sharp unveils ultra-sensitive touch-screen LCD

Japan's Sharp Corp, a leading producer of liquid crystal displays, on Friday unveiled a new LCD system equipped with an ultra-sensitive touch screen.

In the new LCD panel, each pixel carries an optical sensor. This eliminates the need to place film over the panel, meaning better image quality than existing touch-screen designs.

This also allows the screen to respond to touch in multiple points and function as a scanner to make copies, a Sharp statement said.

The technology can also be applied to portable digital devices, which might be used by businesspeople to scan in business cards or for authenticating fingerprints, Sharp said.

Last week, the company said it had developed a liquid crystal display television that is less than an inch thick.

Sharp is a pioneer of LCD screens, having launched one of the world's first LCD pocket calculators in 1973.

Boeing Demonstrates Future On-Orbit Servicing Capability With Orbital Express

A four-month demonstration conducted in space of the Boeing Orbital Express system culminated in an unqualified success. The mission, sponsored and led by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to validate on-orbit servicing technologies, tested the system from March 8 to July 2. Orbital Express met or exceeded all of its test objectives to become the world's first spacecraft capable of performing autonomous on-orbit servicing functions.
