NASA Provides Coverage of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Meeting

NASA is set to hold a public meeting concerning the categorization and evaluation of data on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) at 10:30 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 31. In an effort to ensure transparency and encourage public engagement, NASA has announced it will also host a media teleconference at the conclusion of the meeting.

NASA defines UAP as observations of unidentifiable events in the sky from a scientific perspective, excluding known aircraft and natural phenomena. The primary focus of this public meeting is to facilitate final deliberations before the independent study team publishes their report this summer.

The upcoming report aims to outline methods for evaluating and studying UAP using data, technology, and scientific tools. This initiative, a priority for NASA, will not be a review or assessment of previous unidentifiable observations. Rather, the report will advise NASA on potential data that could be collected in the future to illuminate the nature and origin of UAP.

In accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act, NASA has included an opportunity for public comment in the meeting. Starting from 10 a.m. on Friday, May 12, NASA will begin accepting public questions here.

Following the public meeting, at 3 p.m., NASA will host a virtual post-meeting media teleconference. The agency will stream the audio live on its website. Participants include Dan Evans, assistant deputy associate administrator for research, NASA's Science Mission Directorate, David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation and Chair of NASA's UAP independent study team, and other members of the UAP independent study team.

The UAP independent study team comprises 16 community experts spanning diverse fields relevant to potential methods of studying unidentified anomalous phenomena. NASA commissioned this nine-month study to scrutinize UAP from a scientific perspective and to construct a roadmap for using data and scientific tools to enhance our understanding of UAP. The team acknowledges that the currently limited high-quality observations of UAP restrict drawing scientific conclusions about the nature of such events.
