Lockheed receives SBIRS contract modification

Lockheed Martin Space Systems has been awarded a $25 million U.S. Air Force contract modification for work on the Remote Sensing Systems Directorate's Space Based Infra-Red Systems program.

The contract modification covers follow-on production, which will involve adding geosynchronous Earth orbit transition to operations.

It also adds backend tuning to the baseline. Backend tuning is primarily a ground function, tweaking the process that fuses repetition returns to form tracks and parameter estimation.

Work will be conducted in California with an estimated completion date of June 2019.

The Space and Missile System Center is the contracting activity.

SBIRS is designed to provide persistent, infrared surveillance capabilities that include missile warning, missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness, Lockheed Martin said.
