'Live and Let Fly': Rocket Lab's inaugural NRO launch from Wallops, Virginia

Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (NASDAQ: RKLB), a leader in space launch services, is set to enhance its partnership with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) through a groundbreaking launch from U.S. territory. Scheduled for a launch window opening on March 20th, 2024, the mission, dubbed NROL-123 or 'Live and Let Fly', marks a significant milestone as Rocket Lab's first NRO mission launched from Launch Complex 2 in Wallops, Virginia.

This mission represents a notable expansion of Rocket Lab's operational footprint, building on the success of four previous NRO missions launched from Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula.

The selection of Launch Complex 2, situated at the Virginia Spaceport Authority's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport within the NASA Wallops Flight Facility, underscores the strategic importance of this location for Rocket Lab's U.S. operations. It is also the fourth mission from this dedicated pad for the Electron rocket, illustrating Rocket Lab's growing capabilities and reach.

Peter Beck, Rocket Lab's founder and CEO, emphasized the significance of this mission, stating, "Electron has been providing reliable access to orbit for the NRO since 2020, and we're honored to once again provide critical launch capability, this time from U.S. soil."

Beck highlighted the strategic advantage of being able to launch national security missions from both New Zealand and the United States, offering unprecedented responsiveness and resiliency for small satellite launches. This capability is crucial for maintaining the nation's edge in space, catering to the critical needs of the NRO and its extensive network of government users.

The acquisition of the 'Live and Let Fly' launch service through the NRO's Rapid Acquisition of a Small Rocket (RASR) contract is a testament to the evolving landscape of satellite deployment. RASR facilitates the exploration of new launch opportunities for small satellites with a focus on a streamlined, commercial approach. This approach not only benefits the NRO but also supports over half a million government users across the intelligence community, military, and various domestic agencies.
