Itron Selects Orbcomm For Commercial Gas Meter Monitoring
Fort Lee NJ (SPX) Dec 09, 2005 Orbcomm announced Thursday it has signed an agreement with Itron to provide satellite data communication services for commercial and industrial meters. Under the terms of the agreement, the companies will work together to develop remote monitoring and control products for use in the U.S. and around the world. The first product now available is the Itron C&I Gas Endpoint that provides a low-cost solution for daily reads from commercial and industrial gas meters. "The Orbcomm system is an ideal communications technology for this application because it provides the best combination of coverage, reliability and cost," Robb Emehiser, product manager for Itron, said. "The Orbcomm network allows the Itron C&I Gas AMR Endpoint to reliably monitor meters anywhere in the world, without the challenge of finding terrestrial coverage and dealing with various carriers and technologies." "Itron is the leader in meter reading throughout the world, and we are very pleased they have selected Orbcomm as their wireless data communications partner for this product line," Jerome B. Eisenberg, chief executive officer of Orbcomm, said. The Itron C&I Gas Endpoint reports hourly consumption data for more than 50 types of gas meters and can alert customers to a variety of potential problems via a diagnostic reporting capability in near real time. Notifications are set to occur automatically at regular intervals or also can be initiated by polling, or electronically contacting, the meter. Customers can access meter information and export data by logging on to the Itron web site using their private account.
