Inmarsat Maritime, now a part of Viasat, has announced that Hapag-Lloyd, a leading global container liner shipping group, is among the first to trial NexusWave-a fully managed service offering a comprehensive global connectivity solution. This innovative service integrates multi-orbit, multi-band networks into a single, unified network, providing an unmatched level of connectivity.

These trials are part of Hapag-Lloyd's strategy to implement a strong connectivity solution that addresses growing communications and security requirements, as well as the increasing expectations for both business operations and crew communications.

NexusWave stands out in the maritime communications market by delivering an "office-like" and "home-like" experience that remains consistently connected. Users do not need to worry about usage limits, quotas, or speeds. The service curates various onboard services to meet the specific needs of the owner-operator while providing complete transparency on the total cost of ownership. Additionally, NexusWave offers a future-proof upgrade path to the ViaSat-3 network.

A series of owner-operator trials will assess the reliability of high-speed Internet connections, enabling critical enterprise and IT functions to be moved to the cloud, eliminating the need for onboard maintenance. This will allow ship personnel to align more effectively with office-based colleagues, while crews will gain access to IT services previously only available onshore.

Patrick Briest, Senior Director IT - Network and Operations at Hapag-Lloyd, stated: "With NexusWave, our vessels can transform into floating offices, seamlessly integrated with onshore and cloud-based IT systems. This advancement in connectivity will allow us to further streamline operations through cloud-based solutions, achieving significant cost savings and enhancing crew IT services to match onshore experiences."

NexusWave is tailored to customer needs, utilizing SD-WAN technology to deliver intelligent traffic management that ensures mission-critical operations remain continuously connected. It also supports video-based services, such as remote inspections, while keeping business and crew welfare channels separate to enhance crew connectivity.

Security is a key feature of NexusWave, with traffic encrypted at the vessel level and protected by advanced, enterprise-grade infrastructure trusted by top companies and governments around the world.
