Rome - Oct 17, 2001 Globalstar said Wednesdau that the Italian Navy is in the process of installing Globalstar fixed maritime phone units on each of its major vessels across the entire fleet. The agreement between the Italian Navy and Elsacom, Globalstar's service provider partner in Italy, followed a thorough study by the Navy of the technical and operational capabilities of the Globalstar system in various situations and environmental conditions. Several phones have already been installed and are now in use providing secure, reliable telephone communications from virtually anywhere the ships may be operating. "Not only does this agreement recognize the reliability and high quality of Globalstar service, but it also serves as an important starting point from which other specialized data and phone applications will be developed for the Navy," commented Michael Yates, general manager of Elsacom. "This application also demonstrates the value of this service among government and defense agencies in general, and in maritime applications in particular."
