GKN Aerospace Supplies Key Components for Supernal's eVTOL Technology Demonstrator

GKN Aerospace has successfully delivered the complete composite wing assembly for Supernal's first electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) demonstrator aircraft. By the end of July, GKN will also provide the booms for this Full-scale Technology Demonstrator (FSTD), which is set to begin flights later this year. These components are crucial for the development of Supernal's eVTOL vehicle, anticipated to enter commercial service by 2028.

Manufactured at GKN Aerospace's facilities in Bristol and Cowes, UK, the composite wing assembly and booms are essential for the structural integrity and performance of the FSTD. This delivery reinforces GKN Aerospace's role as a significant partner in the eVTOL project, following initial agreements made in 2022 and 2023.

John Pritchard, President Civil Airframe, commented, "We are excited to support Supernal's multi-year eVTOL testing program. In addition to the FSTD program, Supernal revealed its eVTOL vehicle product concept, S-A2, in January, displaying a full-scale mock-up at the Farnborough Airshow. The S-A2 is designed to meet commercial aviation safety standards and aims to provide a faster transportation option for urban commuters.

GKN Aerospace's ongoing support for Supernal's vehicle development leverages its expertise in advanced aerostructures and materials. This partnership is expected to pave the way for scaled manufacturing and the integration of new technologies to meet the evolving demands of the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) industry.

Jaiwon Shin, president of Hyundai Motor Group and CEO of Supernal, stated, "Acceptance of the composite wing assembly and booms from GKN Aerospace is an important step in readying Supernal's Full-scale Technology Demonstrator for flight by the end of 2024. Learnings from this aircraft will benefit concurrent S-A2 prototyping so we can begin delivering aircraft to operators in 2028 that meet mission requirements and are certified to commercial aviation safety standards."
