Algeria inaugurates Africa's largest seawater desalination plant

Africa's largest seawater desalination plant, capable of producing up to 200,000 cubic meters of potable water daily from the Mediterranean, was inaugurated in Algiers Sunday.

Installed in the Bay of Algiers and inaugurated by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the 250-million-dollar (168.5-million-euro) El Hamma plant will be able to provide water round the clock to the country's capital, where some neighbourhoods suffer from frequent shortages.

The plant -- which will begin operations in March -- is part of a larger project to build 14 desalination stations across Algeria by 2010, capable of producing some 2.3 billion cubic meters of potable water daily.

Philippines to clean up heavily polluted river

The Philippine government Thursday announced plans to clean up the Meycauayan river, described as one of the most polluted places on the planet.
