Solar Systems Like Ours May Be Common
Berkeley CA (SPX) Oct 29, 2010
Nearly one in four stars like the Sun could have Earth-size planets, according to a University of California, Berkeley, study of nearby solar-mass stars. UC Berkeley astronomers Andrew Howard and Geoffrey Marcy chose 166 G and K stars within 80 light-years of Earth and observed them with the powerful Keck telescope for five years in order to determine the number, mass and orbital distance of any of the stars' planets. The Sun is the best known of the G stars, which are yellow, while K-type d ... read more

Scientists Watch For A Hartley-2 Meteor Shower
Huntsville AL (SPX) Oct 29, 2010
This month, Comet Hartley 2 has put on a good show for backyard astronomers. The comet's vivid green atmosphere and auburn tail of dust look great through small telescopes, and NASA's Deep Impact/EPOXI probe is about to return even more dramatic pictures when it flies past the comet's nucleus on Nov. 4th. Another kind of show might be in the offing as well. Could this comet produce a meteor sho ... more

Two NASA Spacecraft Begin New Exploration Assignments
Greenbelt MD (JPL) Oct 29, 2010
Two NASA spacecraft have been assigned a new mission after successfully completing their original science objectives earlier this year. The duo began making observations this week to study how solar wind electrifies, alters and erodes the Moon's surface. Data could reveal valuable information for future explorers and give planetary scientists a hint of what's happening on other worlds around the ... more

Advanced Ruggedized Robotic Exoskeleton Undergoes Validation Testing
Orlando FL (SPX) Oct 29, 2010
Lockheed Martin recently began laboratory testing of an improved next-generation design of its HULC advanced robotic exoskeleton. The testing brings HULC a step closer to readiness to support troops on the ground and others who must carry heavy loads. HULC is an untethered, battery powered, hydraulic-actuated anthropomorphic exoskeleton capable of performing deep squats, crawls and upper-body lifting with minimal human exertion. It is designed to transfer the weight from heavy loads to the g ... read more
