Hawthorne CA (SPX) Aug 23, 2010
SpaceX has announced their Dragon spacecraft has successfully completed a high altitude drop test - meeting 100% of test objectives. This is the last in a series of tests to validate parachute deployment systems and recovery operations before the craft's first launch. During the August 12th test, an Erikson S-64F Air-Crane helicopter dropped a test article of the Dragon spacecraft from a height of 14,000 feet, roughly nine miles off the coast of Morro Bay, California. Working Like A Dog In Outer Space
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Aug 20, 2010
Fifty years ago, Russia made a huge stride in its quest to send a man into orbit. On August 20, 1960, reporters crowded around two small but sprightly dogs, trying to get a good picture of the triumphant space travelers. Belka and Strelka, the first creatures to return safely to Earth after 24 hours in orbit, live on in the memories of former Soviets, unlike many of their predecessors, who ... more

Cosmic Lens Used To Probe Dark Energy For First Time
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 20, 2010
Astronomers have devised a new method for measuring perhaps the greatest puzzle of our universe - dark energy. This mysterious force, discovered in 1998, is pushing our universe apart at ever-increasing speeds. For the first time, astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope were able to take advantage of a giant magnifying lens in space - a massive cluster of galaxies - to narrow in on the nature of dark energy. Their calculations, when combined with data from other methods, significantly incr ... read more
