Voyager 2 At 12,000 Days
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 29, 2010
NASA's plucky Voyager 2 spacecraft has hit a long-haul operations milestone - operating continuously for 12,000 days. For nearly 33 years, the venerable spacecraft has been returning data about the giant outer planets, and the characteristics and interaction of solar wind between and beyond the planets. Among its many findings, Voyager 2 discovered Neptune's Great Dark Spot and its 450-meter-per-second (1,000-mph) winds. The two Voyager spacecraft have been the longest continuously operating ... read more

Answer To What Ended The Last Ice Age May Be Blowing In The Winds
New York NY (SPX) Jun 28, 2010
Scientists still puzzle over how Earth emerged from its last ice age, an event that ushered in a warmer climate and the birth of human civilization. In the geological blink of an eye, ice sheets in the northern hemisphere began to collapse and warming spread quickly to the south. Most scientists say that the trigger, at least initially, was an orbital shift that caused more sunlight to fal ... more

Wet Era On Early Mars Was Global
Paris, France (SPX) Jun 28, 2010
Conditions favourable to life may once have existed all over Mars. Detailed studies of minerals found inside craters show that liquid water was widespread, not only in the southern highlands, but also beneath the northern plains. ESA's Mars Express and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have discovered hydrated silicate minerals in the northern lowlands of Mars, a clear indication that wat ... more

Sofia (AFP) June 25, 2010
Bulgarian Defence Minister Anyu Angelov said Friday he would travel to the US this weekend for talks on a planned missile defence shield in Europe that Sofia has said it wants to join. Angelov's ``seven-day trip, which kicks off on Saturday, will be "the launch of technical negotiations about NATO's missile defence in Europe in general," the minister told journalists. Bulgaria "has not received an official invitation" to host elements of the common defence system, he explained. But he said he ... read more
