Asteroid Sample Return Capsule Recovered In Outback Australia
Sydney (AFP) June 14, 2010
Scientists in Australia's vast Outback on Monday recovered a capsule that they hope contains the first piece of asteroid ever brought to Earth - perhaps offering a glimpse into ancient space history. The pod was ejected from a Japanese space probe as the host vessel burned up in a spectacular display over Australia following a seven-year odyssey across the solar system to the far-off Itokawa asteroid. It lay in the desert dust overnight before scientists were given the go-ahead to retrieve it a ... read more

JOVIAN DREAMS
Chance For Life On Io
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 11, 2010
When it comes to where extraterrestrial life might dwell in our own solar system, Jupiter's moon Europa often grabs the spotlight. However, its extraordinarily volcanic sibling Io might be a possible habitat as well. A bit larger than Earth's moon, Io is the innermost of Jupiter's large satellites and the most volcanically active body in the solar system, with plumes of matter rising up to ... more

Model Helps Search For Moon Dust Fountains
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Jun 11, 2010
In exploration, sometimes you find more than what you're looking for, including things that shouldn't be there. As the Apollo 17 astronauts orbited over the night side of the moon, with the sun just beneath the horizon right before orbital "sunrise," Eugene Cernan prepared to make observations of sunlight scattered by the sun's thin outer atmosphere and interplanetary dust from comets and collis ... more

A New Model To Explain Absence of Organic Compounds On Mars Surface
New Rochelle NY (SPX) Jun 11, 2010
The ongoing search for evidence of past or present life on Mars includes efforts to identify organic compounds such as proteins in Martian soil, but their absence to date remains a mystery. A new theory to explain what happens to these carbon-based molecules is presented in an article published in Astrobiology "There may be no 'safe haven' for these organic molecules on Mars," conclude Ily ... more

Saudis test clearing skies for Israel to bomb Iran: report
London (AFP) June 12, 2010
Saudi Arabia has conducted tests to stand down its air defences to allow Israeli warplanes to use its airspace in any bombing raid on Iran's nuclear facilities, The Times newspaper reported Saturday. "The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way," a US defence source in the region told the paper. "They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren't scrambled and no one gets shot down. This has all been done with the agreement o ... read more
